First Quarter Moon in Capricorn: Bittersweet

Tonight we enter the First Quarter phase with the Moon in Capricorn conjunct Pluto: Clearly we are in a deep time, a dark time, an intense time.

Yet we’re also experiencing a sweet transit today: A trine between Venus in Virgo and Jupiter in Taurus. This earth connection between our two good luck planets creates a sense of being at home in the world.

Venus in Virgo can feel anxious. A trine from Jupiter in Taurus, which is Venus’ nighttime home, helps Venus relax, settling both planets into a grounded feeling that life is good. This lovely aspect is already within orb, which means we can feel it now.

Imagine you have a long to-do list and are diligently working to check each item off. Suddenly you see “coffee date with Jupiter” on the list. Something inside you unwinds. You smile. You know that for that hour or so, you will be in the presence of good cheer and loving support. Who wouldn’t love that?

Yet we’re inevitably drawn back to the Moon, sitting with Pluto in late Capricorn. The Moon is the messenger, the changeable traveler who points out what we’re meant to notice. This being the Moon, it translates into “what we’ll have feelings about.”

Pluto is wrapping up their time in Capricorn, the Earth sign linked to history, tradition, and memory. Pluto’s years in Capricorn have not been easy. We’ve been shown where our societies are breaking down.

Capricorn is also a place of hard work and patience, of toil without promise of reward. Who loves that? No one.

Our coffee date happens against a backdrop of challenge. Pluto and the Moon are, of course, squaring the Sun, Mercury, Eris, and the Nodes of the Moon. At this First Quarter square, we are halfway between our two eclipses.

Things do not feel settled. We’re in a very large field of chaotic energy in which many things can shift. This is simply where we are right now. There’s nothing to be done about it, except flow with the energies as best we can, learning as we go.

Do we ignore Jupiter and Venus because they can’t solve everything for us? Definitely not. One of the things we learn in this world is that moments of calm and sweetness are to be celebrated in times of turmoil and uncertainty.

If you’re a Lord of the Rings nerd (like me), you’ll know these special moments within Middle Earth’s tapestry of danger and loss were precious. The unexpected visit to Tom Bombadil. The magical time in Rivendell. The calm moments in wild country when it was safe to light a fire and roast potatoes.

Such times are to be treasured, not dismissed.

The Venus–Jupiter trine is exact an hour after we enter this phase. The connection marks this time as much as the Moon–Pluto conjunction and the T-square with all the planets around the Nodes.

In the next few days, the intensity increases. October 22, Mercury enters Scorpio and trines Saturn. October 23, the Sun enters Scorpio and trines Saturn on the 24th.

These shifts bring a more somber mood. In the Celtic calendar, we approach the dark half of the dark half of the year, which begins at Samhain.

The Venus–Jupiter trine invites us to revel in what is solid, worthy, peaceful, rich, tasty, and worth devoting ourselves to. Don’t miss this opportunity to find beauty.
