New Moon in Gemini: Magic Words

posted in: Gemini, New Moon | 2

Tomorrow morning, close to dawn, the New Moon in Gemini arrives for me (Monday, June 3, 6:02 am EDT). We are shifting from spring into summer with Gemini as our conductor.

Mercury rules Gemini. Here, he is a wordsmith. Clever, engaging, bright, facile, curious, and always a trickster, Gemini’s symbol is the twins. This sign cannot ever be just one thing.

With transiting Mercury also in Gemini, we’re getting an extra injection of this changeable energy.

Arriving right at the beginning of the month, this is a great New Moon for planning. New Moons are always excellent for setting intentions and making wishes.

In June, we may want to make that process more detailed. In the weeks ahead, making progress toward goals will be challenging at times. Having a plan in hand can make it easier to keep moving. So, take a moment to scan your calendar. Mark out when tasks need to be completed. Note important steps along the way. It will help.

This New Moon is one corner of a T-square, the right triangle aspect pattern that includes an opposition and squares.

The Sun and Moon at 12 Gemini are opposite Jupiter at 20 Sagittarius. (Remember the Sun and Moon get 10 degrees of orb on either side.)

Jupiter is strong in Sagitarius, which he rules, so he brings extra optimism, good luck, and expansive charm. He is retrograde, making him a bit more introspective, but that’s not a bad thing.

Sun and Moon in Gemini opposing Jupiter could start talking and never stop, which gets wearing no matter how charming the speaker.

If you have a lot of Gemini or Sag in your chart, watch out for an extra strong drive to hold forth. If you have friends or loved ones with strengths in these signs, be gentle in getting them to slow down. It will all seem quite normal to them.

The Sun and Moon, and Jupiter, are squaring Neptune at 18 Pisces. Neptune is strong here, adding mysticism, poetry, confusion, and outright deception to the mix. This is a heady combination that can express itself in lovely and also in dangerous ways.

This combination could send us on a quest for the Holy Grail, the Ark of the Covenant, the Seven Cities of Gold, or any of the lost wonders that call to the imagination.

Such quests can lead to amazing and powerful discoveries, or can break hearts and minds.

We might gain new, deep insights on our spiritual path. We might be fooled by a charlatan. We might write the best essay, poem, or story we’ve ever done. We might get talked into buying the Brooklyn Bridge.

The Trickster will be afoot at this New Moon. As Barre Toelken said in his introduction to Barry Lopez’s book, Giving Birth to Thunder, Sleeping with his Daughter, “Coyote is a Gemini.” It is no mistake that Mercury is the patron of thieves as well as merchants.

This connection among Sun and Moon, Jupiter, and Neptune, and among Gemini, Sagittarius, and Pisce, is ultimately magical. And magic itself is not only one thing, but many.

What we call magic in the everyday world is sleight of hand, the ability to use quick movements, clever devices, and strategic distraction to convince an audience they are seeing something that is not really happening.

Clearly, sleight of hand magic belongs to Mercury.

Those who claim to perform actual magic, in any of its many forms and traditions, are often accused of being outright charlatans who cynically play on our credulity and hope. A charge, I might add, leveled at astrologers as well.

In the world of science, things appear magical are seen as something that simple hasn’t been investigated enough yet. One day, all will be understood, all will be clear, and there will be no need to fall back on mysticism to explain how nature works.

Except that the field of physics is becoming more and more mystical as it explores nonlocality, action at a distance, and theories of many parallel universes.

If it feels as if we are going in circles, this too is part of the energies of the New Moon.

Where can we find our compass?

This is where it can be important to check your birth chart and see where the New Moon, and Jupiter and Neptune, will fall. If you have planets or points directly involved, you will feel all this more personally. It’s the difference between realizing we can’t believe everything the media tells us (a general effect) and finding out someone close to you has been deceptive.

Overall, this is a nice New Moon. It’s upbeat, charming, and lucky. If you’re not spending more than you can afford, it could be a good day to buy a lottery ticket.

The cautionary note, already made, is not to bet your life savings on a “sure thing” promised by a handsome stranger.

This really is a both/and situation—which is true for magic as well. As Emily Dickinson said, “Tell all the Truth but tell it slant—“

Sometimes the most important truths cannot be described or shared directly. The “circuit” of language Dickinson writes of are not lies, but what is needed to come carefully to truths that are complex and mysterious.

But how do we tell truth from lies? This connection between Mercury, Jupiter, and Neptune points to the need to use all of our intelligences.

The brain alone won’t be enough. Words can fool us. We need to consult the heart and the gut as well to know whether something feels true, resonates as right, is something we can trust. We need all the ways our minds and bodies work together to keep us clear and pointed in the right direction.

As we choose our wishes and intentions, we can ask for the abilities and sensitivities we need to follow our own truth, the discernment to recognize the boundary between truth and lie we see in the world, and magic—we can wish for magic.
